Supplementary exams: Lecturers coach for free

Lecturers from different Pre-University colleges in Mysuru are training students who did not clear the PU examinations for the supplementary examinations. To ensure that the students pass and are able to continue their studies, the training is being offered for free.

Over 250 students, mostly girls, are being coached in mathematics, physics, chemistry and accountancy at the Government PU College for Women on Double Road in the city. The programme has seen a huge response from students of Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Hassan, Madikeri and surrounding places too.

Lecturers, under the banner of Akhila Karnataka PU Lecturers’ Welfare Association, have identified certain students who find it difficult to grasp concepts and provided them with special training to ensure that they pass. They will hold interactive sessions with students after classes to clarify doubts.

Kadanuru Shive Gowda, president of the association, told The Hindu that the idea of offering free training was considered after it was learnt that many students had joined automobile workshops, hotels and other jobs, choosing to discontinue their studies after failing in the exam. The association had appealed to lecturers to train the students for the supplementary examinations. The lecturers, apart from providing training, are also engaged in helping the students regain their confidence. Many lecturers had also provided lunch and snacks to students during the coaching period.

The association is planning to conduct similar programmes in other districts that registered poor results. Despite several memorandums in the past years, the government has failed to provide coaching to students who did not pass, Mr. Gowda said. Owing to this, the association had decided to hold the special classes.

The association is also planning to approach philanthropists to provide accommodation to students from next year.
