The City Police Commissionerate on Friday organised a function at Kumar Gandharva Rangamandir to return stolen gold and silver jewellery to its respective owners.

The police have recovered 1.665 kg of gold jewellery worth Rs. 44.37 lakh, which was stolen by alleged chain-snatchers belonging to the notorious inter-State Irani gang from Pune.

The gang, which had allegedly been looting women in and around the city for the three to four years, had allegedly committed 31 chain-snatching offences in Belagavi during the last six months.

Speaking on the occasion, Police Commissioner S. Ravi said after the arrest of Salimali Shaikh on April 5 and his accomplice Shahrukh Shakihali, three special investigation teams had been set up and they arrested six more members and recovered the stolen goods from them.

At the function, the valuables were returned to their respective owners by Small Scale Industries and district in-charge Minister Satish L. Jarkiholi, Mayor Kiran Sayanak and MLAs Feroz N. Sait and Sanjay B. Patil.
