The former Prime Minister and JD(S) national president H.D. Deve Gowda has said the Supreme Court’s judgement favouring setting up a Cauvery Management Board would put Karnataka in a difficult situation. Both the Centre and State government have to understand its consequences and act accordingly, he said.

He was speaking to presspersons during his visit to the Hemavati reservoir at Gorur near here on Friday.

“There is no need for celebrating the enhancement in the allocation of Cauvery water to Karnataka. We have to worry about the constitution of the management board. We need to be cautious about what decision the Centre might take on this,” he said. Mr. Deve Gowda said that he will meet Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Water Resources, in Delhi either on March 5 or 6 in this regard. “I will bring the issue to his notice. If the Centre decides to constitute the board, the State will be in a crisis,” he said.

After interacting with officers of Hemavati Dam Division, he said that only 0.75 tmcft of water was available for drinking purpose till the end of May.

“With this amount of water, a portion is being released to people in Tiptur in Tumakuru district. I will collect details about the amount of water being released and convey the same to the Union Minister during the meeting,” he added.
