‘State has failed to protect Dalits’

Social activist Dasanuru Koosanna has condemned the incident of the murder of two Dalits at Santemarahalli in Chamarajanagar district, recently.

Mr. Koosanna was speaking at a function organised by the district administration to mark the 108th birth anniversary of Babu Jagjivan Ram here on Sunday.

The incident reflected the failure of the State government to offer security for Dalits. The issue of death of IAS official D.K. Ravi was widely debated in the State Legislature then. It was unfortunate that though 60 Legislators belonged to Dalit community in the State, they had failed to initiate a proper discussion over the Santemarahalli incident in the State Legislature, he said. Referring to the ongoing debate in political circles on Dalit Chief Minister, he said that along with providing political representation for Dalits, it was essential to eradicate the prevailing socio-economic disparities to bring positive changes in their lives. Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Rathnakar, who inaugurated the programme said that Babu Jagjivan Ram was a great politician, who dedicated his life for the uplift of persons from marginalised sections of society.

Chairperson of State Legislative Council D.H. Shankaramurthy, K.B. Prasanna Kumar, Shivamogga MLA, and Mayor of Shivamogga City Corporation Mangala Annappa were present.
