Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced here on Saturday that the State government would at any cost take up and complete the Mekedatu project, which will generate hydro-electric power and supply drinking water for Bengaluru city, Chickballapur and Kolar.

Speaking at the Jana Mana programme held here, he said that though the State government had repeatedly clarified that irrigation was not proposed under the project as alleged by Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu government has been trying to pressurise it to drop the project.

He said he had clarified several times that the dam was intended to generate hydro-electric power within the framework of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s (CWDT) order. In a bid to get political mileage of it, the Tamil Nadu government might have indulged in politicising the issue, he said.

The CM said that Detailed Project Report was getting ready and once it was over, the State government would seek the consent of the Union government to commence the project.
