‘Splitting Belagavi not before government’

January 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:31 am IST - BELAGAVI:

Excise Minister Satish L. Jarkiholi, who is in charge of the district, has sounded a discordant note on the long-pending issue of creating new districts out of Belagavi saying that the issue of splitting the district was not before the State government now.

His remarks come in sharp contrast with the recent statements of Revenue Minister V. Srinivas Prasad, who said that the district would be bifurcated to carve out a new district with either Chikkodi or Gokak as headquarters.

Mr. Jarkiholi said on Monday that two proposals would be submitted to the government soon to carve two new districts with Chikkodi and Gokak as headquarters, considering the demands of the local people. The Minister indicated that a new district stadium may come up in the city, as the lease period of the existing stadium would expire after ten years.

He said that nearly 60 per cent of encroachments of five main roads had been cleared by the Belagavi City Corporation.
