Kasturba Hospital will observe World Vitiligo Day and offer special packages for patients here from June 25 to 27.
According to a release issued here on Wednesday, vitiligo is an autoimmune disease characterised by skin colour loss. White patches are formed on the skin due to destruction or malfunction of melanocytes, cells that produce melanin.
It affects those in the 10-30 age group.
Over 10 crore people in the world are affected by vitiligo. The human body’s immune system sees the melanocyte pigment cells in the skin as foreign bodies and attacks them resulting in vitiligo condition, the release added.
