Special court grants bail to D.K. Shivakumar, three others

The Special Court for Economic Offences, Bengaluru granted bail to Water Resources Minister D.K. Shivakumar and three others on Saturday in a criminal case lodged by the Income Tax Department for allegedly attempting to evade tax and filing false I-T statements.

Sunil Kumar Sharma, proprietor of Sharma Transports, Anjaneya Hanumanthaiah, a government employee working as assistant liaison officer at Karnataka Bhavan, New Delhi, and Rajendra N., a retired caretaker of Karnataka Bhavan, are the three others granted relief.

There is already a stay order from the High Court of Karnataka on proceedings against another accused, Sachin Narayan, a business associate of Mr. Shivakumar.

The case was registered after the seizure of “unaccounted for cash” of ₹8.59 crore during raids conducted on four flats, belonging to Mr. Shivakumar and his business associates, in Delhi last year. The I-T Department had alleged in its complaint before the special court that Mr. Shivakumar, along with the other accused, had engaged in transporting huge amounts of unaccounted for cash on a regular basis through hawala channels.
