Special camp to be organised for people with disabilities

At a grievances meeting held recently, a number of complaints were registered by people with disabilities. In the light of this, D. Randeep, Deputy Commissioner, Mysuru district, has decided to hold a special camp for people with disabilities in the second week of June in all taluks.

Right from the issuing of disabled certificates to many other services, the district administration will provide legitimate facilities to the disabled.

Mr. Randeep told The Hindu that he was shocked that a large number of disabled persons had complained that they were being deprived of many facilities.

He added that officials of all the departments, including three-member doctors, would be present at the camps.

The doctors would issue disabled certificates. Other officials would not only educate the disabled about the schemes and programmes implemented by the government but also help them avail of the same.

Complaints galore

The disabled persons complained to the Deputy Commissioner at the meeting that one or two doctors would invariably be absent at the certification camps that were being organised every Tuesday at the taluk hospitals. Owing to the absence of these doctors, the beneficiaries were not receiving the certificates even though they had made a number of visits to the hospital for the same purpose.

Mr. Randeep said that he had also instructed the District Health Officer to ensure that eye, ENT and orthopaedic doctors would compulsorily have to be present at the camps on Tuesday. “These initiatives are aimed at eliminating the hassles the differently-abled face in getting their disability certificates,” he said.

Smart cards

The district administration is also planning to issue smart cards to all the 60,000 handicapped persons in the district. The proposed smart cards will have data such as the disability percentage, personal details, employment details, education details, bank account numbers, and facilities availed.

This accumulation of details would prevent disabled persons from making multiple copies to get different benefits.
