The last rites of Meenakshi Devi (65), the second daughter of the last Mysuru maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, was held in the city on Friday. She died in Bengaluru on Thursday and the body was brought to the city at night.
Her son Varchuswee S.S. Raje Urs performed the last rites in keeping with the traditions of the royal family at Khaas Brindavan or Madhuvana on the Mysuru-Ooty Road.
The mortal remains was taken in a procession to the Madhuvana, accompanied by palace insignia, and was consigned to flames after completion of elaborate rituals amidst chanting of the hymns in the presence of the members of the royal family and friends.
Earlier, the body of Meenakshi Devi was kept at her in-laws’ house at Lakshmipuram to enable public, friends and relatives to pay their last respects. Her sisters Kamakshi Devi, Indrakshi Devi and Vishalakshi Devi along with their family members were present.
Elected representatives, including Mayor R. Lingappa and MLA M.K. Somashekar visited the place and expressed their condolences to the grieving family members.
Meenakshi Devi’s husband, Sardar Lakshmikanthe Raje Urs, who was an advocate passed away many years ago.
