Minister in charge of Mysuru district V. Somanna on Saturday said the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC)’s silk weaving factory in Mysuru was in need of a makeover.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the century-old factory here, Mr. Somanna, who also holds the Sericulture portfolio, said the factory was unable to meet the demand for saris because of limited production and lack of expansion. Expansion of the factory, opening production units, adding machineries in factories including in Mysuru and Channapatna, has become necessary, he added.
The Minister, who was accompanied by Mysuru MP Pratap Simha, said the factory maintenance was not satisfactory but the operations and quality had been maintained. Mr. Somanna, who received a memorandum from the factory workers seeking hike in wages, said the wage issue will be resolved soon after holding another meeting with the factory officials. “The salary being given to contract workers was meagre,” he felt and added that steps will be taken to fill vacant posts.
