Small industries hit by erratic power supply

Processing, textile sector the worst off

The power situation in the State has left several industries powerless. Though the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has commenced scheduled power cuts for residential consumers, commercial and industrial consumers are also bearing the brunt of erratic power supply.

Bescom is likely to discuss implementing power cuts for industrial and commercial establishments on Tuesday.

Those affected most are micro and small industries, said V.K. Dikshit, president of the Karnataka Small-Scale Industries Association (KASSIA). With an estimated six lakh industries being part of the association, and about a lakh among them located in and around Bengaluru, processing industries have been hit hard, he said.

“Industries are already faced with power cuts that are scheduled and unscheduled with the duration ranging from two to four hours. Large industries have power backup, but the micro industries find installing power generating units very expensive,” Mr. Dikshit said.

Processing industries, such as plastic, foundry and rubber, are the worst-hit. “When plastic is being moulded, it is melted. If power goes off, it becomes hard again,” he said.

While industries in Bengaluru are being assured of 20 to 22 hours of power supply, those in Tumakuru and Malur are faced with power cuts extending up to seven hours, he said, adding that they are helpless as of now.

Tallam R. Dwarkanath, president of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), said the least the Bescom could do is to inform industries beforehand if there are to be power cuts. “At present, they are unscheduled. We are requesting them to inform us beforehand as it is hampering production,” he said.

The textile industry has also been orly affected, he added, as have been other continuous-processing industries.
