The logo for Srirangapatna Dasara-2019, a three-day cultural extravaganza that will commence from October 3 on the banks of the Cauvery at Srirangapatna, was launched here on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner M.V. Venkatesh, District Superintendent of Police K. Parashuram and others released the logo at the DC’s office. Briefing presspersons about the programmes, the officer said the former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna would inaugurate the event by offering puja to ‘Nandi Dhvaja’ and Goddess Chamundeshwari. The cultural importance of rural Mandya, cottage industries, and tourism places of the district, and farming culture will be highlighted during the event, Mr. Venkatesh said.

Rural sports have been organised on the second day, and a job fair has been proposed on October 5. An array of programmes, including a food festival, a flower show (till October 11 at Brindavan Gardens), yoga dasara, poetry recitals, kushti, and musical nights, are in the offing, according to the DC.

The Mysore Dasara Committee is lending three elephants, horses and a wooden ambari — which will participate in the Mysuru Dasara procession — for the Jamboo Savari. An idol of Goddess Chamundeswari placed on a mantap on a decorated elephant will be taken out on various streets from Bannimantap to Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple after the inauguration.

As many as 23 tableaux and 30 folk teams will participate in the savari that will be held on the inaugural day.

Security arrangements, including additional forces and CCTV cameras, will be in place for the celebrations, Mr. Parashuram said.

According to K. Yalakki Gowda, CEO of the Mandya Zilla Panchayat, the venues will be cleaned and tableaux from all seven taluk panchayats will also take part in the procession.

The event has a history of more than 400 years and it was celebrated as a ‘victory parade’ by Raja Wadiyar I, who conquered Srirangapatna from Sriranga Raya in 1610. Raja Wadiyar started the tradition of celebrating Dasara in Srirangapatna, as it was the capital of the then Mysore State.
