Slum dwellers oppose multi-storey residential complexes

Updated - September 24, 2015 04:47 pm IST - Mandya

Residents of different slums in the town staged a protest outside the residence of Housing Minister M.H. Ambareesh here on Thursday to urge the State Government to modify its ambitious plan of constructing multi-storeyed residential complexes at Halahalli slum.

Under the banner of Mandya Zilla Shramika Nivasigala Okkoota, the slum dwellers took out a procession and staged the protest.

The Karnataka Slum Development Board has decided to construct multi-storey residential complexes at Halahalli slum to house 1,335 families under the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) at a cost of Rs. 65 crore. Despite opposition to the project, the tender process for the housing scheme has already been completed.

The government has decided to construct ground floor plus three floor complexes in the 14-acre land. But the buildings would inconvenience women, elders, patients and children, who will be unable to climb the flight of stairs. Hence, the board should review the plan and ensure that the residential complexes have just one floor, they demanded.
