Silence from top JD(S) leadership on leaders’ spat rings loud in Karnataka

Amid the spat between Janata Dal (Secular) State president A.H. Vishwanath and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the silence from top JD (S) leaders has not gone unnoticed. There has been no direct effort by either Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy or JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda to advise Mr. Vishwanath to refrain from making remarks that could harm the coalition’s image.

In fact, many believe that allowing Mr. Vishwanath to speak is part of a strategy to counter Mr. Siddaramaiah’s supporters who have been plugging for him to be Chief Minister again. Both Mr. Gowda and Mr. Kumaraswamy are said to be equally upset with that development.

Party sources said that the ongoing spat between the two top leaders would be detrimental to the interest of coalition. The issue is likely to be discussed threadbare by the coalition coordination committee, which will meet after the Lok Sabha polls.

Yeddyurappa wades in

Responding to the verbal duel between Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Vishwanath, BJP State president B.S. Yeddyurappa on Tuesday said Mr. Vishwanath’s words were those of Mr. Gowda and Mr. Kumaraswamy.

“The fight between the Congress and the JD(S) is intensifying. People are fed up with it. Both Congress and JD(S) leaders have backstabbed each other in the Lok Sabha elections. Vishwanath’s statement is the result of this. No matter who says what, we consider it the statement of Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy. The chaos is growing large beyond our expectation and anything can happen as a result,” Mr. Yeddyurappa told reporters in Kalaburagi.
