The peripheral cancer centre has been upgraded to a full-fledged cancer hospital in Kalaburagi city and it will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on May 27.

Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil told The Hindu here on Saturday that the Chief Minister will also lay a foundation stone for a dharmashala next to the cancer hospital to provide boarding for relatives of patients.

Dr. Patil said that the dharmashala is being constructed with ₹ 6 crore of funds from Infosys Foundation.

He said that the hospital has all the latest facilities, including a LINIAC machine, a full-fledged CT stimulator, chemotherapy unit and operation theatre. In addition, the latest brachytherapy unit will be installed at a cost of ₹3 crore.

Dr. Patil said that the inauguration of the proposed exclusive women and child hospital in Kalaburagi will take few more weeks, since some departments are yet to shift to the new building.

Dr. Pail said that the completion of the structure for establishing the trauma centre is in the final stages of completion and it is epxected to be completed by August end.

To a question on the additional MBBS seats added to the kitty of Karnataka in the government quota, Dr Patil, said that 350 seats have been added to the government quota with the increase of intake in the existing government medical colleges at Raichur, Bidar, Shivamogga, Belagavi, Mandya and Hassan, from the existing 100 seats intake to 150 seats, and also by increasing from 150 seats to 200 in the KIMS, Hubballi.

This is besides the 900 seats added with the opening of six new government medical colleges.
