Shortage of teachers in government schools and drinking water crisis dominated the general body meeting of the zilla panchayat here on Saturday.
The Education Department was struggling to maintain quality of education and improve the performance of SSLC students due to severe shortage of teachers. Of the 6,020 posts sanctioned for government primary schools in the district, 1,304 posts were lying vacant. Similarly, there were 163 vacant posts in government high schools.
B. Basavaraju, Opposition party president in the ZP, raised the issue during the meeting and urged the zilla panchayat to initiate measures to address the problem.
The Hindu had reported the issue of shortage of teachers and its impact on the performance of students. The authorities concerned should initiate measures to improve the quality of education in government schools, he said.
Deputy Director of Public Instruction M. Shivamadappa said that positive steps would be taken in this regard.
Zilla panchayat member D. Shivalingaiah and Srirangapatna taluk panchayat president Prabhavathi requested for supply of purified drinking water to a few villages in their constituencies as they were facing acute shortage of drinking water.
According to them, several borewells had remained defunct for the past few weeks and repeated appeals to repair them had fallen on deaf ears.
According to the former president of the zilla panchayat M.T. Suresh Kanti, the drinking water at Gejjalagere had high fluoride content.
Rohini Sindhuri, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, instructed the officials to repair the borewells and also initiate steps to supply purified drinking water to the parched villages.
Zilla panchayat president Chandrakala, standing committee presidents Divyashree, Manjula and V. Manje Gowda were present.
