The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) on Tuesday raided three shops in Shivarampet, which were selling plastic bags that were less than 40 microns in thickness in violation of the rules.
MCC Health Officer Nagaraj told The Hindu that 50 kg of plastic bags were seized from the shops and the shops were also sealed.
There are no units in Mysuru manufacturing plastic bags that were less than 40 microns and Dr. Nagaraj suspected that the seized plastic bags came from outside the city. “We have received information that the plastic bags were manufactured in Nagpur in Maharashtra and sent to the city,” he said and added that efforts would be made to mount a vigil at the toll gates and check posts.
Meanwhile, when asked about the recent Cabinet decision to ban plastic, irrespective of its thickness, Dr. Nagaraj said that a government order in the regard was yet to be issued. However, an order banning manufacturing, storing, supplying and selling plastic bags with thickness of less than 40 microns was in force, he added.
