As part of the BJP leaders’ ‘Slum Vastavya’ programme, MP and BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje spent a night at Kyathamaranahalli in Mysuru on Saturday.
Ms. Karandlaje stayed at the residence of Indresh in a Dalit colony in Kyathamaranahalli, which is part of Narasimharaja Assembly constituency.
After participating in a meeting to discuss arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mysuru on February 19, Ms. Karandlaje headed to Kyathamaranahalli, accompanied by party leaders and workers. Talking to residents of the locality about the facilities offered by the State government, she also brought to their notice the Union government’s programmes and the schemes introduced by the erstwhile BJP government in the State.
Snap protest
A section of residents staged a protest against Ms. Karandlaje for calling the Dalit colony a slum. The protesters accused the BJP leader of defaming the area just because it was a Dalit colony. The colony, they said, had been home to many educated persons.
Meanwhile, Ms. Karandlaje on Sunday morning released a booklet titled ‘Slum Dourbhagya’ or Misfortune of Slums to highlight the Congress government’s failure to address the problems of slum-dwellers.
Speaking to reporters, she criticised the Congress government for doing little for slum-dwellers. Despite tall claims, the Congress government had not taken any steps to improve civic infrastructure in the slums, she stated.
