Shankar Bidari to join BJP today

more-in

The former Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Shankar M. Bidari is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bangalore on Wednesday.

The entry of a retired head of the State police force into the principal Opposition party, at a time when it has been attacking the Congress government over issues related to law and order has triggered speculation that he may be used to dig more into the loopholes with respect to policing as well as law and order.

Interestingly, he is being admitted into the party just when the government has drafted the services of another retired police officer Kempaiah to advise Home Minister K.J. George.

Mr. Bidari’s entry into the BJP coincides with the elevation of the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa — who has a close rapport with him — as the party’s national vice-president. Party sources maintained that as of now, the party had not promised him any position and he is joining it unconditionally.

After retiring from service, Mr. Bidari took a plunge into politics by joining the Congress. However, he quit that party after being denied ticket to contest the Assembly elections from Terdal constituency.

Later, he joined the Samajwadi Party. But he quit that party too and floated his own outfit, Janashakti. He had also contested unsuccessfully as an Independent candidate in the recent Lok Sabha polls from Bagalkot.

Mr. Bidari, who has served as Commissioner of Bangalore city and DG & IG of the State, had earlier worked as the commandant of the Special Task Force which carried out operations against forest brigand Veerappan.
