The government has selected seven gram panchayats (GPs) in the district for the prestigious Gandhi Gram Puraskar for 2014-15.

The Ministry of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development has selected Katteri Gram Panchayat in Pandavapura taluk, Agrahara Bachahalli (in K.R. Pet taluk), Keregodu (Mandya), Ragi Bommanahalli (Malavalli), Yadaganahalli (Maddur), Belagola (Srirangapatna) and Bellur Gram Panchayat in Nagamangala taluk.

As many as 80 gram panchayats from the district were in the race for the award. The seven were selected for their achievement in implementing various schemes, including the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), a senior officer at Mandya Zilla Panchayat told The Hindu .

The Ministry also assessed the success of State and Centrally-sponsored schemes related to drinking water, health and hygiene, collecting tax, women empowerment, and so on.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will confer the awards to the presidents and panchayat development officers (PDO) of the gram panchayats at a function to be held at the banquet hall of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Friday, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

The gram panchayats will receive Rs. 5 lakh in cash, a citation and a certificate.

N.D. Prakash and C.V. Sneha, deputy secretaries of the zilla panchayat, appreciated the presidents and PDOs for bagging the awards.
