Mayor Kavita Sanil has called upon residents to segregate dry and wet waste at home and also limit the use of plastic bags.
Inaugurating a training programme on waste segregation at the Town Hall for health workers recently, Ms. Sanil said residents should cultivate the habit of segregating waste and handing it to the personnel of Antony Waste Handling Cell Private Limited – the agency authorised to collect waste from houses.
It was important to properly dispose waste and also limit the usage of plastic bags, she said, and added that vehicles of the agency have been altered to collect both dry and wet waste.
Ms. Sanil also administered the oath to councillors, MCC staff and pourakarmikas on proper waste segregation. She released stickers on waste segregation.
As many as 219 pourakarmikas, 42 daily wage workers and 623 outsourced cleaning staff underwent training on waste segregation.
They were also made aware of safety precautions and given health tips. The permanent pourakarmikas were given health cards. Other health workers would get their health cards in the coming days.
Saplings planted
Earlier, Ms. Sanil, Commissioner Mohammed Nazir, and Councillors Shashidhar Hegde, Abdul Ravoof and Nagaveni planted saplings in the ground behind Town Hall and initiated the drive to plant a minimum of 25 saplings in each of the 60 wards in the city.
Ms. Sanil has planned to plant about 1,500 saplings of fruit-bearing and other trees this month.
