Congress leaders dubbed the Modi government as “anti-farmer and anti-poor” and took a pledge to defeat BJP-backed candidates in the coming gram panchayat elections in the State.

To mark the completion of two years in office, the State Congress held a mega convention titled ‘Sarvodaya Samavesha’ at Bapuji MBA College grounds here on Saturday and claimed that the performance of the Modi government during the last year was dismal compared to the achievements of the Congress government in the State.

Amidst heavy rain, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulab Nabi Azad and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President G. Parameshwara delivered speeches and praised the performance of the Congress government during the two-year rule.

Mr Siddaramaiah said that the government stood up to the expectations of the people and delivered a “scandal-free” administration. Unlike the BJP regime, where cases were filed against 13 Ministers, there were no cases against Ministers in his government. The Opposition – BJP and JD(S) – make baseless allegations without substantial documents, he said.

The Congress would return to power after the 2018 elections to the State assembly, the Chief Minister said.

Owing to heavy rain and wind, several leaders cut short their speeches and others declined to deliver speeches. Congress Ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs and KPCC office-bearers were present on the dais.
