Rural residents urged to seek MNREGA jobs

October 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - KOPPAL:

Krishna Udupudi, Chief Executive Officer, Koppal Zilla Panchayat, has appealed to the people in rural areas to make use of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) instead of migrating in search of employment.

Mr. Udupudi, in a release, said that in view of the fact that the district was reeling under drought condition due to failure of monsoon, there was no need for the people to migrate to cities in search of a job as they could get assured employment for a period of 100 days under the MNREGA.

He said people in rural areas could get employment under the community-based schemes and also take up individual works such as construction of cattle sheds, improving soil fertility, and water shed programmes among other things.

He said Panchayat Development Officers had been instructed to accord priority to providing employment to those who apply besides taking up other community-based works to generate employment. They have also been instructed to initiate steps to instil confidence among the people in rural areas and deter them from migrating. People could also take up construction of individual toilets and planting of fruit-bearing trees to protect the environment.

In case there was a delay in providing employment under MNREGA, people could inform senior officials through the helpline (08539 220174/9482030938) between 10 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. which would be followed up immediately, he said.
