A sum of Rs. 23 lakh was burgled from the Kadur branch of Canara Bank. The burglary came to light on Monday, when the bank officials reported for duty.
Preliminary enquiry by the police suggested that the burglars entered the bank by breaking a toilet window. They opened the locker using a drilling machine and took away the cash. It was not clear when the incident occurred, as the bank was closed since Saturday afternoon. The burglars took away the entire cash. However, they could not open another locker, in which gold jewellery worth over Rs. 10 crore was kept.
Cameras not working
K. Santosh Babu, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu that the CCTV cameras installed by the bank were not working and so was the alarm system. “The bank had no security guard,” he said. “We have formed a team and will catch them [burglars] soon,” he added. Branch manager of the bank, Dayanand, has filed a complaint with the Kadur police.
