Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda said on Thursday that the State’s allocation for the education sector in the 2012-13 budget was a record in the country. The State has earmarked Rs. 15,071 crore for the sector, he said while inaugurating a State-level “Shalegagi Navu Neevu” programme at the Government Higher Primary School at Beglihosahalli in Kolar taluk.
Emphasising that his Government was according priority for education, Mr. Sadananda Gowda enlisted the Government’s achievements. Bicycles worth Rs. 584 crore have been distributed to 23 lakh students during the last four years, he said. Student-teacher ratio has been brought down to 26:1, he added.
Pass percentage both in SSLC and PUC has improved this year owing to concerted efforts of the Government to impart quality education, he said.
He released a booklet published by Information Department on development activities in Kolar district.
In his address, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said that the process for appointing teaching staff for high schools and pre-university colleges is on. This is being done to ensure that students do not suffer due to shortage of teachers, he said.
Minister for Textiles and District in-charge Varthur Prakash presided over the function. Legislators M. Narayanaswami, S.N. Krishnaiah Setty and Y.A. Narayanswamy participated. Education Department Secretary G. Kumar Nayak, Commissioner, Public Instructions, K.S. Prabhakar, Deputy Commissioner D.S. Vishwanath, Zilla Panchayat President N. Manjula and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P. Rajendra Cholan were present.
