October 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - YADGIR:

Assistant Commissioner of Yadgir Sub-Division Durgesh Rudraksha has said that 19 cases of suicides because of mounting debts were reported in Yadgir district from March till date, and a compensation of Rs. 12 lakh have been distributed so far to the bereaved families.

Mr. Rudrakasha is also the Chairman of the review committee of farmers’ suicides in the district.

Talking to The Hindu in Yadgir on Thursday, Mr. Rudraksha said that five of the cases were rejected because those farmers did not fall under the norms issued by the State government in this regard. They neither had land in their names, nor had they taken loans from nationalised banks or cooperative societies. Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) reports of eight cases were still awaited, he said.

Compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each was paid to families of the following farmers: Hanumantharaya Bhimaraya of Hadnur village of Surpur taluk; Basavarajappa Hanumatharaya of Gogi village of Shahapur taluk; Paramanna Madiwalappa and Eshwarappa Doddappa Pujari, both from Mudnur village in Surpur taluk; Timmanna Bhimanna Somannavar of Kandkur village in Yadgir taluk and Manappa Sharanappa of Khanapur village of Shahapur taluk, he said.
