Rise in quantum of water release to TN riles farmers

July 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - Mandya:

The Irrigation Department’s measure to increase the quantity of water being released from the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir to Tamil Nadu has prompted the farmers to stage flash protests at different parts of the district.

As per a Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) order, to clear the July-quota, the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL) has increased the quantity of flow from the reservoir, CNNL sources said.

The outflow to Tamil Nadu was at the rate of 3,731 cusecs at 6 p.m. on Thursday, and it rose to 9,113 cusecs at 6 p.m. on Friday.

The inflow on Friday evening was at the rate of 3,133 cusecs. Water-level in the reservoir stood at 108.25 ft., while the full-reservoir level stands at 124.8 ft.

Strongly criticising the authorities concerned for increasing the flow, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) staged protest demonstrations in Maddur, Srirangapatna and at some other parts of the district. They urged the State government to stop releasing water to Tamil Nadu immediately.

According to them, CNNL’s move to increase the quantity is against the interests of farmers in the State.
