Right-wing leader criticises Sadananda Gowda’s stand

Union Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda has come under attack from BJP strong supporter and right-wing orator Chakravarthi Sulibele over his remarks that he “pities those who are misleading people on flood relief”.

Mr. Gowda had made the remark in a tweet after several leaders and organisations went public in their criticism against the delay in the Centre releasing aid for flood relief in Karnataka.

Taking exception to it, Mr. Sulibele said the entire State is pitying Mr. Gowda for showing the audacity to describe flood victims of north Karnataka as those misleading the people.

Asking him not to forget that his ministerial position was actually “alms” given by people, he wondered what was the use of assistance if it does not come when people are gearing up to rebuild their lives.

He did not spare Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who said that a report on rain damage in Karnataka is being finalised. He tweeted: “Finally madam @nsitharaman responded. Thanks. But the value of food is high only when we are hungry! Please act as soon as possible.”

In a retort, Mr. Gowda told reporters in Bengaluru that it was “not possible to build the nation through such tweets”. He said: “I do not have an answer for those who stoop to the level of individual attack. We have wiped the tears of flood victims. They are our people and their welfare and future is our responsibility.”
