V. Srinivas, director of Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Science (VIMS), is hopeful that the intake of 150 seats for the first-year MBBS course for the current academic year would be retained.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Friday, Dr. Srinivas said that a team from the Medical Council of India (MCI) visited the VIMS premises recently for an inspection of the college and hospital observing certain deficiencies.

“After that incident, I went to New Delhi and submitted a compliance report to MCI and the Union Ministry of Health. After going through the report, sources hinted that VIMS being a government-run autonomous institution, the intake would not be altered,” he said.

It may be mentioned here that since 2012-13, the intake of students for first year MBBS was enhanced to 150 from 100.

Regarding the delay in disbursement of salary for the doctors, Dr. Srinivas said that he was awaiting the government order for release of grants for the first quarter.

Meanwhile, doctors have been complaining that they have not got their salary for the past three months and the teaching association has already given a memorandum to expedite the process of disbursing their salary.
