Residents of Malligenahalli village staged a demonstration in the city on Wednesday urging the State government to safeguard ‘grama thana’ land — reserved for public use in their village. Addressing the protest meet, Shankar Naik, a resident of the village, said that some people were trying to encroach on the ‘grama thana’ land in survey No. 57 near the village.

The land was used by the residents here for grazing the cattle. A few persons have tried to sell the land to real estate developers by creating fake documents.

As the land is within the Shimoga city, the land-grabbers have planned to develop a residential layout, Mr. Naik said.

He also alleged that a section of gram panchayat workers were also hand-in-glove with the land-grabbers.

He demanded the Deputy Commissioner to conduct a probe punish the erring persons.
