‘Repair work to begin soon’

K.S. Eshwarappa, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and district-incharge Minister, has said that the work of repairing the buildings of government schools, bridges, tanks and roads that were damaged due to heavy rain and flood in the district this year would commence soon.

He was speaking at a meeting held here on Thursday to review the relief works in rain-affected areas.

Mr. Eshwarappa said that ₹9 crore has been released for repair of buildings of government schools and anganwadi centres that were damaged due to rain in the district since August 1 and the tender formalities would be completed by November 5. A proposal has been submitted to the State government seeking ₹24 crore for the repair of 441 tanks managed by Zilla Panchayat and 182 tanks that come under the purview of Department of Minor Irrigation.

K.B. Sivakumar, Deputy Commissioner, said that 7,515 families have submitted applications seeking compensation for the damage to their houses and compensation has already been provided to 6,701 families. Eighteen persons have died this year and compensation has been provided for the dependants of 15 persons.
