To upgrade the skills of police personnel, including police constables, head constables and assistant sub-inspectors, and help them keep abreast of the latest developments on all fronts, the Police Department will organise a refresher training programme at Channapatna from May 15, Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Rupak Kumar Dutta has said.

After inspecting a Ceremonial Parade at the District Armed Reserve Police Grounds here on Monday, Mr. Dutta said that police personnel should undergo refresher training once in every five years to update their skills and inculcate the essentials of the IT Act, soft skills and cyber crimes.

Highlighting the significance of the parade session for the police, Mr. Dutta said that regular parade would make police personnel more disciplined, agile and at the same time help them start thinking positively. Mr. Dutta issued instructions to the Superintendents of Police to conduct parade sessions in their respective districts regularly. He lauded the police personnel for a grand parade and congratulated Superintendent of Police N. Shashikumar who led the parade.

Mr. Dutta said that a modified police beat system introduced in the State would help decentralise power in the police force to give police constables and head constables of local stations more control as well as responsibilities.

About 90 % of police personnel, including constables, head constables and assistant sub-inspectors, would be deployed under the modified police beat, the objective of which was to decentralise power. Police constables and head constables should handle minor cases and learn procedure such as registering first investigation report and filing charge-sheets, so that senior officials focussed on complicated cases, he added.

Meanwhile, the police beat members selected from each area should help in bridging the gap between the police and the common public. Stressing the need for attitudinal change among personnel, he called upon the personnel to maintain cordial relations with people for smooth maintenance of law and order.
