The bail plea hearing of mining baron G. Janardhana Reddy, which was expected to be heard on Monday, was postponed to Tuesday owing to the demise of Union Minister Ananth Kumar.
Advocates representing Mr. Reddy had filed an application before the session court, but as a holiday was declared on Monday, the matter was posted to Tuesday.
Mr. Reddy was arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on Sunday and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days, on the charge of criminal conspiracy, based on credible information obtained during the course of investigation. The witness statement and legal scrutiny of the investigations led to the arrest, Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, who is heading the investigation, said.
The bail hearing is expected to take a couple of days as the CCB is planning to file a strong objection against plea to grant bail. As Mr. Reddy has political clout, granting bail would hamper the ongoing investigations, a senior police officer said.
The mining baron is housed in a separate cell in the Bengaluru Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara, due to security reasons. The prison staff have been provided with adequate security, sources said.
The CCB is following the money trail of ₹20 crore. “The focus of the investigation is to recover the money and provide relief to the investors [of Ambidant Marketing Pvt. Ltd.],” he said.
