protest crushed

Sir, — We need to condemn and deplore the arrest of the peaceful protesters who were demanding a fair and swift probe into the recent death of Fr. Bismarque Dias. People need to know how and why Fr. Bismarque Dias so suddenly departed. The right to peaceful

protest cannot be undemocratically muzzled by the government. The BJP, while in the Opposition, had held protest demonstrations on any and every issue, but once in power, the BJP has time and again trampled upon and crushed voices of dissent.

IIIT, if not IIT

Sir, — After 64 days of hunger strike, and three successful bandhs which could not elicit the desired response from the Centre, the fight for an IIT at Raichur took a new twist with five agitators resorting to a fast-unto-death . It has been reported in the print media that the expert

committee, in its concluding lines, suggested shifting the Indian Institute of Information Technology to Raichur. Although citizens of Raichur may not agree initially to this, if the State government and

Centre push for it, there is a chance they will.

Operate traffic signals

Sir, — Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk that has nine roads intersecting is a classic case of traffic chaos in Kalaburagi. With no traffic signals operating, police constables have a herculean task of managing traffic .

The situations at other intersections such as Rashtrapati Chowk, Jagat Circle, Khuba Plot-Main Road intersection are no different. The administration should re-establish working of traffic signals and facilitate flow of vehicles.

Migratory birds

Sir, — The water bodies in and around Raichur city attract migratory birds during the winter. Herons, storks, ibis, and ducks are found in abundance in these lakes. The winter season is also an active season for poachers. One can see poachers during the early hours and late evenings. The authorities should initiate steps to safeguard the habitat of the birds.
