Unscientific

speed-breakers

Sir, — There are 17 speed-breakers on a less-than-one-kilometre stretch on the road from Raichur’s Basavanabhavi Chowk leading towards Gadwal. The speed-breakers are unscientific and do not confirm to any rules and regulations.

Two-wheeler riders have a harried experience while travelling on this road. Many motorists have suffered from damage to their vehicles.

I request the authorities concerned to free the road from these unscientific humps and make driving a pleasurable experience.

KSOU mark-sheets

Sir, — Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) has a procedure to issue provisional marks card which is sent to students after declaration of results of various examinations.

The students should check the marks and if there are any differences, they have to be brought to the notice of KSOU and within a month or so, the original marks card will be generated.

But this seldom happens. Even when requested for originals, the authorities put innumerable queries, including demanding a copy of hall ticket.

I request the authorities concerned to issue the original mark-sheets based on the provisional marks card after the lapse of the prescribed period and prevent inconvenience to students.

Secondly, no notification has been issued by the KSOU regarding admissions for this year. This may be due to the UGC derecognising some of its courses after 2012-13, which is mainly applicable to technical and online courses but not to traditional courses such as MA and BA and others. As the future of a number of students is involved, I request the authorities to clarify the position of admissions for the benefit of the public as well as the students.

Sensitise police personnel

Sir, — While the Karnataka government has a law that penalises people from involving in violence against medical establishments and doctors, at the ground level the police doesn’t seem to be acting on the provisions of the law.

Recently, a woman doctor was assaulted in Kalaburagi district.

Similar attacks on doctors and ransacking of hospitals are not uncommon.

In instances where doctors are alleged with medical negligence, the highest court of the country has laid down the procedure to be adopted to act against such doctor.

Yet, the standard operating procedure seems to be restricted to the elite section of society.

There is a need to have an orientation programme to sensitise the officials on the field — Police Sub-Inspectors and others — about the provisions of the law and the standard operating procedure to be adopted by the administration.

This will go a long way in highlighting a valid issue and would act as a deterrent to people who become a law unto themselves.

Condemning VC’s extension

Sir, — We need to strongly condemn the very high-handed move to give Goa University Vice-Chancellor Satish Shetye a two-year extension. Goa University’s Executive Committee is trying to swiftly amend the Goa University statute so that Dr. Shetye, who is due to retire this month at the age of 65, gets an extension. By amending the statute, it will defeat the spirit and intent of restricting the retirement age of the VC, which was to induct relatively younger persons in the management of the university.

sDr. Shetye’s only achievement is that he has acted as a dedicated mouthpiece of the government, while dancing to the tunes of the ruling BJP in running the Goa University.

The extension would affect the university adversely by denying it the services of more acclaimed and capable national-level personalities. Since the inception of Goa University in 1985, all the VCs appointed have been from the Science stream. It is time to get an eminent personality from other faculties such as Arts, Commerce or Management as the next Vice-Chancellor to infuse the much-needed dynamism and acche din at the university.

Aires Rodrigues,

Goa
