RCEP: State MPs will meet PM on behalf of dairy farmers, says CM

Four-day Krishi Mela-2019 begins on GKVK campus

Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Thursday told dairy farmers here that a delegation of State MPs would soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister to draw their attention to their concerns over imports of cheap dairy products under the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Mr. Yediyurappa also asked them not to panic over the possible pact.

Inaugurating the four-day Krishi Mela-2019, organised by the University of Agricultural Sciences-Bengaluru (UAS-B) at its GKVK campus in Bengaluru, the Chief Minister said he had already written to the Centre, explaining the concerns of the State dairy farmers. “In the next four to six days, all the MPs from the State are set to meet the Central authorities to take up your issue,” Mr. Yediyurappa told them.

Earlier, former Agriculture Minister and Congress MLA Krishna Byre Gowda brought the concerns over RCEP to the Chief Minister’s notice.

“Dairy has been the backbone of the farming economy in Karnataka as it is one of the few States that have well-networked milk cooperatives that ensure guaranteed incomes. If the cheap import of milk produce is allowed into the country, Karnataka milk cooperatives would be in a shambles and farmers will be pushed to the streets as they would lose stable income,” he said. He appealed to the Chief Minister to use his political influence to explain the serious negative impact to the Centre.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Yediyurappa expressed concern over the country losing 40% of its agricultural produce in post-harvest losses, while many people are not getting enough food. “We must plug the post-harvest losses which account for over ₹50,000 crore a year,” he said.

He also appealed to farmers to give more importance to organic farming in the interest of health and environment.
