Rajan Deshpande to receive Shankar Vaidya Shree Award

Considering his contributions to children healthcare’s in the last 40 years, Rajan Deshpande, a Dharwad-based paediatrician, has been chosen for the Dr. P.S. Shankar Vaidya Shree Award for 2018. Narendra Badasheshi, secretary, Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratishtan, said the award, which consisted of a cash prize of ₹10,000, a medal and a citation, would be presented to the doctor at the 19th anniversary of the Pratishtan scheduled for January 1, in Kalaburagi.

Dr. Deshpande, a celebrated paediatrician in the country, is known for his high-quality services at affordable costs to patients from poor and marginal backgrounds at Vithal Clinic & Nursing Home in Dharwad. He is also credited with introducing Gift of Life, a project of US Rotary based in New York, to India and offering open-heart surgeries to thousands poor children for free.

“Dr. Rajan Deshpande, with his team of medical professionals, relentlessly served poor patients in West Africa. He is known for treating very complex and sensitive health issues at very low-costs using limited resources. His services were fondly recognised and appreciated in Africa... With his creativity, honesty, efficiency and dedication, he has won the hearts of millions of people in Dharwad,” Mr. Badasheshi said in a statement.
