Consequent to heavy rains in the catchment area of the Cauvery and the Kabini, the four major reservoirs in the basin are fast filling up, and the water-levels are higher than what they were during the corresponding period last year.

With the Cauvery catchment area in Kodagu receiving good rains during the week, the inflow into the reservoirs has been steady since the last few days.

Water-level in the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS), near Srirangapatna, rose to 100 ft on Saturday night. The reservoir level was 99.15 ft at 6 p.m. and it breached the 100-ft mark at 7.30 p.m., sources at the Engineering Regulation Section (Gauging) at KRS said.

The inflow into KRS was at the rate of 33,339 cusecs and the outflow was at the rate of 361 cusecs at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday. The Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of the dam is 124.8 ft. The water level during the corresponding period last year was 81.25 ft.

Kodagu district received 66.9 mm of rains on Saturday Madikeri taluk recorded 97.1 mm, while Virajpet registered 77.23 mm of rainfall; Somwarpet received 26.37 mm.

Parts of Kodagu that received significant rainfall include Bhagamandala (142.2 mm); Napoklu (117.2), Srimangala (90.6), Ponnampet (66.8 mm), and Hudikeri (87.7 mm).

The Kabini reservoir is expected to reach its FRL of 2,284 feet within a couple of days given the present rate of inflow. The inflow on Saturday was at the rate of 32,738 cusecs and the outflow was around 19,167 cusecs. The reservoir level was 2,280.35 ft as against 2,271.55 ft during the corresponding period last year.
