President of All India Congress Committee Rahul Gandhi visited Siddaganga Mutt in Tumakuru on Wednesday and gave a bouquet which had 111 roses in it to the senior seer, Shivakumara Swami, who celebrated his 111th birthday on April 1.

Mr. Rahul Gandhi came to the mutt around 3.45 p.m. though he was supposed to arrive at 2.30 p.m.

He spoke with the seers, Dr. Shivakumara Swami and Siddalinga Swami, for more than 15 minutes. He said that he was very happy to get the blessings from Dr.Shivakumara Swami.

The senior seer recalled the visits of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to the mutt and gave photographs of their visits to Mr. Rahul Gandhi. He was also given a portrait of Dr. Shivakumara Swami.

Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee G. Parameshwara, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and former Union Minister and MP Mallikarjuna Kharge. MLC Ugrappa, MLA Rafiq Ahmed and others were present.

Devotees barred

A few devotees at the mutt expressed their anger against the police for not allowing them to call on the seer and have the food served at the mutt.

The police had closed all the gates of the mutt and did not allow devotees from noon till Mr. Rahul Gandhi left at 4.30 p.m.

Gowramma of Sira said that she was waiting since afternoon to see the seer but was not allowed. She said “I would have not come if I knew that devotees were not allowed due to Rahul Gandhi’s programme.”

Many roads of Tumakuru wore a deserted a look as the police had made them ‘zero traffic’. A lot of inconvenience was caused to the people as they had to take alternative roads to reach their destinations.

People in large numbers stood by the side of the roads to get a glimpse of Mr. Rahul Gandhi.
