“Apart from writing great literature, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore also significantly contributed to rural reconstruction and education,” said H. Vinod Bhat, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University.

He was speaking after inaugurating the programme ‘A Day with Tagore’ organised by the Dr. T.M.A. Pai Chair for Indian Literature, Manipal University, here on October 4.

Presiding over the inaugural programme, Vaidehi, chairperson of the chair, spoke on how Tagore brought out the ironies and complexities of life through his works. ‘A Day with Tagore’ was a day-long event comprising plays, talks, readings, songs and visual representation pertaining to Tagore. ‘Jorasanko’ – a mix of readings, songs and visuals – based on Aruna Chakravarthy’s book, was presented. This was followed by a talk by Siva Kumar from Shantiniketan on Tagore’s paintings. A play, The prophet and the poet , was also enacted.
