Tension prevailed at Shivappa Nayaka Circle in the city on Wednesday when the police tried to evict pushcart vendors operating there.
The eviction operation was executed in wake of complaints from the shopkeepers at Shivappa Nayaka Circle, Gandhi Bazaar and surrounding localities that the business conducted by pushcart vendors on the footpaths and on the streets was resulting in traffic snarls and law and order problems.
When the police asked the pushcart vendors to stop their transactions, they raised objections and expressed their ire by dumping fruits and vegetables on the road Vehicular movement along B.H. Road, Gandhi Bazaar and MKK Road came to a standstill for some time. Despite the protest, the police shifted more than 20 pushcarts from Shivappa Nayaka Circle and Gandhi Bazaar .
K.A. Dayanand, Deputy Commissioner, and M. Ashwini, Superintendent of Police, spoke to the protesters. The vendors demanded the officials to allow them to resume their business at Shivappa Nayaka Circle, Gandhi Bazaar and Veerashaiva Kalyana Mandir Road.
