The first anniversary of demonetisation, which falls on Wednesday, will be marked by celebrations and protests.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will observe the day as ‘Anti-Black Money Day’ and Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar, who is in charge of elections in the party, will deliver a lecture on “One year of demonetisation”. The BJP will hold meetings at all district centres on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, most of the other parties — the Congress, the Communist Party of India and the Aam Aadmi Party — have announced protest rallies in the city.
Continuing the protest against demonetisation, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) plans to organise a massive rally in the city on Wednesday morning. Titled ‘India Suffers’, the rally will see participants wearing black badges and marching from the Gandhi Statue in Maurya Circle to Freedom Park.
KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao said all top leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC president G. Parameshwara and K.C. Venugopal, AICC secretary in charge of Karnataka, will participate in the rally. The party will hold a candlelight vigil in the evening near the war memorial as a mark of respect to those who lost their lives waiting in queues in front of ATMs, said Mr. Dinesh Gundu Rao.
The CPI will hold a protest demonstration at Mysore Bank Circle. The AAP has announced that it will observe the day as ‘Betrayal Day’ and hold a rally from the RBI office on Nrupatunga Road to the DC’s office on K.G. Road.
