Activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a protest here on Thursday condemning the killing of two senior CPI(M) leaders in West Bengal recently.
The workers staged a road blockade at the KSRTC Bus Stand Circle and burnt an effigy of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to express their ire against the alleged atrocities on the Left and democratic forces in that State.
Holding the ruling Trinamool Congress activists responsible for the killing of the former CPI(M) MLA Pradip Tah and Kamal Gayen, the protesters criticised the alleged atrocities by the TMC against functionaries of Left organisations, including CITU and CPI(M), ever since the party came to power last year.
“As many as 58 Left activists have been killed and offices of Left organisations have been destroyed or encroached upon by TMC men in West Bengal in an attempt to stifle the voice of the Opposition,” CPI(M) district secretary Gandhinagar Narayanaswamy alleged.
Expressing concern over the incidents in West Bengal, he said that they reminded one of the “semi-fascist terror” of the 1970s.
CITU leaders B.V. Sampangi and Nagaratna and KPRS district secretary T.M. Venkatesh participated.
