The State government’s proposal on levying luxury tax on weddings that cost over Rs. 5 lakh, with 1,000 guests in attendance has long been forgotten. But the issue may be resurrected at the Legislature session with senior Congress MLA K.R. Ramesh Kumar planning to move a private member’s Bill that restricts expenditure on marriages.

The proposal of the government was to pool the amount collected to make a ‘marriage fund’ to sponsor marriages of the poor or to hold mass marriages. But it never saw the light of day.

Other Bills

Among the other private member’s Bills to be tabled is one by JD(S) MLA K. Gopalaiah, who wants one of the three universities to be formed after trifurcation of Bangalore University to be named after Kannada matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar.

JD(S) MLA M.T. Krishnappa will also move a Bill proposing to doing away with the Upper House of the State legislature.
