Poojary slams Modi over his silence on farmers’ suicides

Senior Congress leader B. Janardhana Poojary on Saturday castigated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continued ‘silence’ when hundreds of farmers were committing suicide every day across the country. “This silence is dangerous to the country,” he said.

Mr. Poojary told presspersons here that the Union government has a major role to play in alleviating farmers’ agony while State governments have a limited role. Instead of helping out farmers, the Prime Minister is doling out largesse to corporates, the former State Congress president alleged.

Mr. Modi’s foreign jaunts are not for the welfare of farmers, but for the corporates who have been supporting the BJP government, Mr. Poojary alleged.

On the farmers’ suicides in Karnataka, Mr. Poojary said he had advised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to visit the bereaved families. It was good that the former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna visited some of the families, he said.
