Deputy Commissioner, D. Randeep said that of the 220 Gram Panchayats in Vijayapura, elections will be held for 210 GPs. There will be no polls for the other ten for various reasons.
Addressing presspersons about the preparations for the GP election to be held in district on May 29, he said that while seven GPs have been upgraded to town panchayats, two have obtained stay from the High Court and one GP is yet to complete its term, therefore the elections would not be held in these GPs.
Sharing other details, he said some 2,500 ballet boxes would be used for the polls as Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are not being used.
A total of 12,19,159 including 6,37,937 male and 5,81,186 female voters could exercise their franchise to elect 4,293 members in 1,480 polling booths in the district, Randeep said.
The DC said that each taluk would have a team of 4-5 members for keeping a close watch on the election proceedings on polling day and to prevent any violation of model code of conduct.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Jinendra Khanagavi who was also present, said that the district police needs about 2,500 personnel of various ranks for smooth conduct of election.
“Besides this, 14 platoons of District Reserve Police and five platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police also needed for the bandobast duty”, he said.
Mr. Khanagavi informed that the police have identified 157 hyper-sensitive, 341 sensitive and 1,094 general polling booths in the district.
After ten years
After a gap of ten years Torvi Gram Panchayat, that has 34 seats, will hold elections this time.
It may be noted that owing to alleged technical mistake by previous officials in including the village under the list of GP, elections could not be held.
The village also failed to get included into Vijayapura city municipal limits, thus for ten years, it the village neither was part of urban nor rural area. Now, with the new guidelines, the village would see GP election this time.
