Police on Tuesday rescued a woman who was tied to a pole and beaten up by villagers in Belavatti in Belagavi taluk on Tuesday.

Alleging that the woman was peddling illicit liquor, a mob entered her house, dragged her out and beat her up by tying her to a pole. The mob also claimed to destroyed a few pots of “home-brewn liquor”

Upon receiving information, police rushed to the village. The angry mob got into an argument with the police and began throwing stones at them. Bheemshi Madar, a villager, and two policemen were injured in stone pelting.

Police dispersed the crowd and admitted the victim to Belagavi district hospital.

The victim’s sister told the police they were attacked as they had not repaid old loans. “We had taken hand loans to the tune of ₹50,000 from local money lenders. We couldn’t pay back in time, that is why they beat her up,” she told the police. While accepting that her family was selling liquor, the victim’s sister claimed they stopped selling it a few months ago.
