‘Police have not got due recognition’

Inspector General of Police (North Eastern Range) Sunil Agarwal stressed the need for an introspection among police personnel on the general aversion towards the police from the public, despite doing good work and laying down their lives for the good of citizens. Presiding over the Police Martyrs’ Day observance in Kalaburagi city on Wednesday, Mr. Agarwal said that police personnel had not got the due recognition and respect for the sacrifices made by them in the line of duty. He said that it was the duty of every single policemen in the State to rebuild confidence and the bridge the gap between the police and the public.

Mr. Agarwal said that with the full cooperation and confidence of the public, police personnel can perform still better and maintain law and order situation more effectively.

The first and foremost task of the policemen should be to treat those visiting the police station with respect and attend to their complaints honestly and effectively. Police stations should be converted into people-friendly places, where anybody can approach with a complaint without a sense of fear or apprehension.

Deputy Commissioner Vipul Bansal also stressed the need for building a strong bond between the public and the police. Superintendent of Police Amit Singh in his address said that 434 police personnel, including 11 from Karnataka laid down their lives while discharging their duties last year.

‘Supreme sacrifice’

Yadgir District and Sessions judge N. Sharanappa offered floral tributes to the memorial of police martyrs on the occasion of Police Martyrs’ Day and highlighted the sacrifices made by the police personnel while discharging their duties. He said it was the duty of the society to recognise and appreciate the sacrifices made by the police personnel.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Ravindra Karbari, Deputy Commissioner Manoj Jain, and Chief Executive Officer of ZP Vikas Suralkar were present.

Police martyrs’ day was organised in Bidar on Wednesday. Citizens laid wreaths on the memorial at the Police Grounds in Mangalpet. Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tewari spoke of the sacrifices of warriors who died in the line of duty.

SP Sudhir Kumar Reddy read out the names of the police personnel who died on duty in the country. Retired deputy superintendent of police A.D. Basannanavar was honoured.
