The Shivamogga City Corporation has submitted a proposal to the government seeking permission to establish a plant for producing fuel briquettes from organic waste, Deputy Mayor M. Palakshi has said.

The proposed plant would be established on public-private-partnership (PPP) model on the premises of the existing solid waste treatment plant at Anupinakatte here. The work related to the plant would commence after completing the tender process, he told press persons here on Tuesday.

At present, about 105 tonnes of solid waste is generated in Shivamogga, daily. The proposed plant, which would be established on a pilot basis, would be able to handle about 15 tonnes of organic waste, daily. The estimated cost of the project was around Rs. 93 lakh. Fuel briquettes produced there could be used by industrial units for operating boilers, he said.

The city corporation had also submitted a proposal to the government for establishing a bio-methanation plant on the premises of the hostel for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes at Vidya Nagar locality here. The plant would use five tonnes of solid waste daily to generate biomethane at an estimated cost of Rs. 38 lakh, he said.

In addition, the Shivamogga District Chamber of Commerce and Industries had come forward to establish a pyrolysis waste treatment plant here, where solid waste would be subjected to thermo-chemical decomposition at high temperature with minimal oxygen. The proposed plant could handle both organic and inorganic waste. The plastic waste could be converted into bio-fuel and organic waste into manure at the proposed unit, he said.

It had been planned to establish a sewage treatment plant at Mahatma Gandhi Park here. The proposed plant would handle 50,000 litres of water, daily. After treatment, the water could be used for maintenance of the park, he said.

The approval of the government had been sought for installing a bronze idol of Mahatma Gandhi at Mahatma Gandhi Park. The work of installation of the bronze idol of B.R. Ambedkar on the premises of the city corporation would be completed soon, he said.
